Melissa Brooks & The Aquadolls Caught on Film

muses

Emma is the editor & creator (and occasionally writer) for The Messy Heads. She enjoys yellow curry, print media, and singing to herself.

It was a warm, sunny day in Los Angeles but inside the dark, blue lit walls of the Echoplex, “It’s raining, it’s  raining….” The band walks out on stage and Melissa takes the microphone, swaying as her long blond hair catches sherbet colored lights streaming in from both sides. She smiles, leans into the microphone and says “Happy Valentines day, let’s mosh.”

The crowd ripples with energy and bodies bounce of each other, singing along to her opening song, “Our Love Will Always Remain,” a dreamy ballad that takes you back to a summer love filled with late nights, rocking waves, sneaking out, and that glowy feeling. Really cute. Even cuter when you remember it’s Valentines day & Melissa is singing alongside her boyfriend & Aquadolls guitarist, Ryan.

The Aquadolls have this way of setting the mood of the room. Maybe it’s their chemistry together, Melissa (lead & guitar), Bella (back up vocals & bass), and Ryan (back up vocals & guitar) often leave their mics to stand back to back and jam out or make faces at Jake (drums). Maybe its the candy colored lights. Maybe it’s the beach balls bouncing around the room like popcorn on the stovetop.

Whatever their secret is, the mood is set, and everyone in the room has entered Aquadoll land. Imagine mid July at midnight, feeling hazy, dreamy, and romantic in the way that makes you giggle into the darkness. They have always been one of my favorite bands to watch because they don’t take themselves too seriously and yet effortlessly bring you into their world.

Throughout the set, those brave enough or stupid enough to climb up on stage have a mic pointed at their mouths to fill in the lyrics. As soon as they complete a line and dance a little bit alongside Melissa, they dive off the stage with euphoria written across their faces and smiles that stretch to the ceiling. Those who don’t dare climb up on stage still get the occasional microphone pointed at them, an audience mad libs. It creates this community between the performers and audience, melding them together underneath the neon lights in a venue too small to hold this much energy.

Melissa flips her hair up at the end of a song, and turns to the DJ in the back left corner of the stage. “How much time do we have left? Enough for one or two more songs?” The end of her sentence is muffled by the audience screaming for more.

The people out in the crowd cling on to every lyric, you can see glitter dancing on the cheeks of some of the girls in the crowd as they smile and sway. For their final song, the Aquadolls all turn and face each other, giving nods, smiles, glances, before ripping into their instruments. “I LIKE FRUIT CUZ FRUIT IS GOOD” is their final parting lyric as they dip out of guitar straps and climb from behind drum sets to dive into the crowd, surfing a wave of energy that they created.

It’s raining its raining I wish that it was sunny out
It’s chilly so chilly I wish that it was summertime again,
So dear
We’re laughing and grooving and surfing till the sun goes down
We’re chillin and killin its always fun when you’re around me,
It’s so clear
Looking back to the past its times like these, I wish they would last
Though times get rough, I know that you will always be there
For me, for all to see
And I promise that I’ll do the same
The flowers that you gave me on the table
They may wilt but our love will always remain
It’s chilly so chilly I wish the clouds would open up
It’s truly unruly the messes that we get ourselves in, oh dear
It’s crazy so crazy the way that you could love someone
We’re lazy, so lazy we really gotta get our shit done, and its our fear
Looking back to the past its times like these, I wish they would last
Though times get rough, I know that you will always be there
For me, for all to see
And I promise that I’ll do the same
The flowers that you gave me on the table
They may wilt but our love will always remain
